This home is a true historic treasure. Designed by the “Father of Skycrapers,” architect William LeBaron Jenney built this home amidst his other, much larger--and taller--projects throughout the midwest and Manhattan in 1887. According to my research, this home was originally built for Col James H Bowen, the first president of the Calumet and Chicago Canal Dock Company, and known as the “father of South Chicago.” Today, Bowen High School in South Chicago is named in his honor. You can see what I mean about a house full of history!
What I love most about this home, and what makes it so unique, is the attention the sellers took in maintaining its original details and proportions, ensuring the spirit of the home lives on. Upon entering the home, you are immediately struck by the original staircase, which is the crown jewel of the large foyer. The dark wood and intricate millwork is in perfect condition and is unlike any I have ever seen.
Walk through into the living room with a full wall of large windows, topped with original crown molding the likes of which “they just don’t make anymore!” Such a beautiful room that is so classic in its decor, that it will translate into any future buyer’s style. Just off the living room is the sun porch, which may be one of my favorite rooms--it would be nearly impossible to let any more natural light through. The wood accenting is the perfect shade for the light to bounce off--a beautiful place for a morning coffee and the paper.
The formal dining room also has so many incredible, character-filled details: original millwork, the ornately-designed ceiling, sconces, built-ins, and fireplace in combination are an ode to old world charm. But of course in the kitchen modern upgrades count for much more--and the modern chef’s kitchen in this home is the perfect balance of modern amenities, with an eye to maintaining the home’s original design.
Upstairs find the master suite with a lovely sitting room featuring a fireplace, dressing area and new master bathroom. Two additional large bedrooms are adjacent to a full hall bathroom, and a heated porch overlooking the professionally-landscaped yard. For additional space and flexibility, the third floor features two additional bedrooms, plus a gym, kitchen, laundry room and new full hall bathroom. Head down to the lower level for the wine cellar, laundry room and workroom. Talk about options!
This impeccably cared for home sits on a beautiful and spacious 70’x250’ corner lot in the historic neighborhood Kenwood. Multiple parks, Whole Foods, downtown Hyde Park and Lakeshore drive are all in close proximity.
