In 1873, as part of an effort to make Chicago a "garden city," urban designers planned a series of linked parks and boulevards throughout the city, ending on the northwest side at Logan Boulevard. Today, Logan Boulevard boasts open green spaces running along either side, intersecting with Milwaukee Avenue and Kedzie Boulevard to frame the actual Logan Square.
Well-groomed homes and stately mansions grace lush, tree-lined streets surrounding
Logan Square, while the recent addition of vintage light fixtures adds to the old-world feel. On smaller streets off Logan Boulevard, quainter homes and newer two- and three-flats abound. While some of the more impressive residences are featured in the
annual Historic Mansion Housewalk, there are a number of spacious one-, two-, and three-bedroom flats or houses ranging from $160,000-$350,000.
Over the past century, Logan Square has attracted a diverse population, with a large number of Puerto Ricans, Eastern Europeans, and young, artistic professionals now calling the neighborhood home. The restaurants and nightlife reflect this diversity, and, for its relatively small square footage, Logan Square boasts over 100 restaurants (many of them family-owned), cafes, bistros, and bakeries. In fact, some of the best Mexican and Cuban cuisine served on the north side of the city can be found in local hot spots.
Nestled in the southwest portion of Logan Square,
Palmer Square reflects the same wide-open boulevards and parkways as its neighbor. Billowing trees shademansions lining the main streets, while smaller homes and greystones are tucked away on quiet side streets. The centerpiece of the neighborhood is the actual Palmer Square, a wide-open 10 acres of lush park space. Residents are within walking distance of bustling Logan Square and trendy Bucktown.
Both Logan Square and Palmer Square are situated near the Blue Line California stop, making it easy to travel into the Loop. A few CTA buses run routes through the area as well, and the Kennedy Expressway remains easily accessible for those who prefer to drive.
