Grounded in over a century of history and development near the Ravenswood neighborhood,
Lincoln Square, bounded by Lawrence on the north and Montrose to the south, blends a welcoming atmosphere with metropolitan culture and convenience. Residents and city planners have fought to keep population growth at bay, working to designate 20 percent of the area as Historic Preservation District. Today, just over 40,000 people reside in this neighborhood that has managed to preserve its historic buildings, lending an Old Europe feel to the community.
A stroll down many of the shaded, tree-lined streets reveals Victorian homes, two- and three-flat grey stones, and an assortment of courtyard condominium buildings. Rehabbed walk-ups can be found, as well. Young families and long-time residents settle in the area both for it history and affordable home prices; single bedroom home prices range from $120,000 to$190,000, though larger, Victorian homes can get as high as $650,000.
The tight-knit community always has something happening, from art fairs and farmer's markets to music festivals and 5K races. The Lincoln Square Apple fest in the fall and the Tree Lighting Ceremony before Christmas are two of the favorite events among locals. And, once a year, the area hosts the largest German-American festival in the city.
Centered at Lawrence, Western, and Lincoln Avenues, the heart of the neighborhood boasts specialty boutiques, national retailers, trendy restaurants, and local theaters. The community's German roots are reflected here, as well: The Chicago Brahaus serves up classic Old World fare, as do anumber of specialty bakeries. In recent years, a number of specialty ethnic restaurants have begun to open, including Thai, Italian, and Greek spots.
For commuters and those who love traveling into the city, both the
Brown Line and Ravenswood Metra stop in the neighborhood.
