Bucktown
First settled by the Polish working class in the 1830's, Bucktown saw an influx of German immigrants 15 years later. In fact, the neighborhood is named after the abundance of male goats raised in the backyards. Like Wicker Park, just to the south, Bucktown experienced additional growth in the early to mid 1900's but saw a decrease until artists and musicians began congregating there around 1975, settling in huge warehouses and abandoned loft spaces.
Bounded on the north by Fullerton Avenue and the south by North Avenue, Bucktown has, in recent years, begun to attract young professionals and families both for its location and multiple housing options. Once modest cottages have been converted to trendy condos, and two- or three-flats abound. Still, older single-family homes remain, giving the neighborhood unique character. The increased popularity has driven prices up in the past 10 years, though spacious two-bedroom condos can still be found for under $300,000.
In spite of the impressive growth, or perhaps as a response to it, the neighborhood still exudes a bohemian influence, reflected in the art galleries, eclectic shops, and ethnic restaurants mixing with new night clubs and swanky bars. In fact, each August, artists showcase their work along neighborhood streets during the Bucktown Arts Festival, drawing visitors from all over the city. The shops running north along Damen Avenue are particularly popular for treasure seekers, as most are one-of-a-kind boutiques not found in the rest ofthe city.
Many of the most popular, and packed, restaurants call the triangle around Milwaukee, Damen, and North Avenues home, promising delicious food and late-night revelry. Enjoy delicious Italian at Barcello?s or French-inspired cuisine at Meritage Wine Bar and Café. Or, kick back withfriends at local favorites Cans Bar and Canteen or Piece, where chefs create most any pizza you desire.
With so much within the neighborhood and Wicker Park just tothe south, many residents don't find it necessary to venture far. Should they need to commute to the Loop, the Blue Line is easily accessible, as is the Kennedy Expressway bordering the east side of the neighborhood.
